I have been patient to frame most of my paintings for the last 10-15 years. I have a considerable amount of paintings stored away, and I feel the majority deserve an open space where they can be fully seen and appreciated in a clearer way for the experiences they are. Today, I bought three windowmount card frames to suit three to hand paintings. I took three paintings along to the Art Store to see their fit, with the frame. I would like to create my own frames in the future, so these three are a good starting point. I bought two frame sized 12 x 10′s and one frame sized, 10 x 8. I was happy each painting flowed with each frame, and the frame matched or accentuated the painting as you can see in the picture below.
This is my first step in frame fitting and I am happy to learn more about it, considering I am new to it. The frames don’t have backs, so I am going to create and read about what would be the most suitable undermount for these kind of frames and paintings in watercolour. I feel that I will go with the flow, and act upon what I feel is right for each. This framing experience will make way for more learning experiences, which can take me into new ways of making frames and mounting. I am enthusiastic about the framing, as the paintings will be beautiful on the wall in a good home.

Hey deb,
Good to see you.
I sure am, have always wanted to make best use of my ‘hidden’ paintings. They deserve their own space, and care.
Your paintings are so peaceful, and your frames will bring out their beauty!
Thank you so much anneskal.

Hey kimmi,
Thank you and I am glad that you enjoyed that little treat.
Beautiful Ana! I actually have two paintings my grandmother did which I have been procrastinating about getting framed and on the wall. This motivates me a bit. Let us know what you learn about all this.

Hey christie,
Thank you.
Why do you feel you have been procrastinating about getting them framed on the wall? Is it something that you’d really like to do? Or not? Or you just waiting for inspiration?
I’ll keep you all updated on the frames, as it sure will be a fun experience to share, and inspire.
Look like you have diversified your sources of fun. Haha.. Great work.

It is a pleasure to have you here, and thank you for the comment.
Do you think you need to frame your photographs? Simply, just to frame. As sometimes when we see something that is closely related to our own experience, we begin to get inspired by it, but it may not be what we really want to do.
They look very nice – and relaxing, maybe because of them being made with watercolor
Are you planning on selling them or are they supposed for gifts and such?

Hey Klaus@TechPatio,
Nice to see you.
Thanks for your comments.
I am not planning on selling them or giving them away as gifts, though that’s a good idea for the future. Thanks.
When I feel like giving something to someone, I just create the art/craft on the spot and than give to them as an act of that experience in expression for them. The art/craft always reflects how I feel for that person.
hello ana!
glad to hear that. for me, i really don’t have a talent in framing. I tried but it looks awkward.hehe.
god bless you and your family!

Hey Michael,

Nice to see you.
At least you gave it a go, and that is what counts.
Likewise both to you and your family.
Doing and experimenting is 90% of the joy, I find.
Great framing!

Great idea Ana to bring those back out!
I guess for an artist there is always a right time of when and what to do with their specific work. I love the framing idea too

Ana,
My brother and mother used to run a custom frame shop, and adding matte boards and frames to your artwork can really increase the value of your pieces. Matte boards are the layer above the artwork, but below the frame. They come in many styles, textures, fabrics, etc.
To answer the backing question, once you have your piece framed, turn the frame over and add two sided tape to the outer edge of the frame. Cover the back of the frame with backing paper and use a blade to trim off the excess paper by cutting slightly inside the outer edge of the frame. It will be nice and tight, providing a professional finish. Place a sticker with your information in the bottom corner for others to contact you for future orders.
Check with your local frame shop (Michael’s, Aaron Brothers, etc.) for the correct type of backing paper, and you can do the rest on your own.
I hope this helps.

Hello Mark Smith,
Thank you for visiting, and providing us with such detailed information. How did your mother and brother find the custom frame shop venture? Did they get much business?
This does help very much, thank you again. I wouldn’t have known this otherwise. I have been browsing various sites about it, but it was far too much information and I was overwhelmed. That sounds like a very good tip, and simple too. Is it OK with watercolour painting too, or it doesn’t matter which it is?
I’ll let you know how I get on.
Thank you so much.
Ana,
Although I am by no means the expert, the type of front is more important. Glass vs plexi glass, and the different types which allow the elements (sun, heat, etc) to cause your images to fade. The backing has nothing to do with protecting your artwork. The matte just adds another layer to the look of the piece, and to tie in the colors of the wall you hang your artwork on. Since you have no idea who will be owning your artwork, or what color their walls are when you select the colors for your piece, the frame and matte colors do the blending for you.
They ran a successful shop in San Diego for more than a decade, and they specialized in both small pieces (stitchery, shadow boxes, poster art) as well as large custom fine art and gallery quality artwork.
I still suggest you go to the local frame shop, and talk to the people working there for tips. They will be more than happy to sell you supplies, and it isn’t too difficult to finish your own artwork without spending thousands on professional equipment like my family did.

Nice frames! I purchased frames and mats for some photographs I took. Unfortunately, the mats are too thick for the frames and I can’t fit the backs on them. Glad you like yours!

Nice to see you, and thanks. I have still yet to work on them, as I have shifted back to writing again.
That’s a shame about your mats.
Have you found a use for them? Despite them not fitting your photographic frames.
Hello Ana, This is my first time on your blog, and I think these frame designs are very relaxing and fresh. I like art as I’ve been studying graphic design at school for 4 years. Thank you for sharing!

I’m glad that you find these frames relaxing. They do look rather suiting don’t they! Especially with the paintings.
Are you enjoying your graphic design course at school? And what kind of things have you learnt from it?
Congrats on the success! Let us know how the frame designs work out as that is something fairly rare in the marketplace today!
Hey WineofMonth Club,
Thank you so much, that’s very kind of you.
I shall keep you all updated on my framing progress, once I get to it.
Thanks for visiting.
Really beautiful Ana! Those are very nice paintings. You could probably make a fortune out of your paintings.

Congragulations on your award, I shall indeed check it out!
Your paintings are beautiful.

Thank you FringeGirl,
It is nice to see you again on here.
Hope you are well.
Gorgeous! How long have you been painting? I love how simple and yet “deep” they are! Do you have a How-to-paint page?
Dear Rachel,
Thank you for visiting, and the comment.
I have been painting since I was very small.
I remember my mum giving me something to scrunch when I was a few months old, and after that came the colours and the freer expressions in any form. (Mainly lines all over books)
I don’t have a “how to paint page” but that does sound like an excellent idea.
I do offer you some tips though, to paint what you like the most, as it brings out a greater appreciation for that likeness and your expression. Being welcome to it, helps. Painting it through your own heart, you are able to capture the vividness of that experience.
