Family Ties: Historical Novel
Part 2
(Character Build Up)
The Edwardian clock struck six past the hour, as Beth finished her daily round of chores in the Shaftsbury Manor house. Beth was a slim golden toned looking girl, with darkened deep eyes irresistible to any strangers’ charm. Beth headed towards the pantry, where the butler stood preoccupied with a note he contained in his hand, bewildered to the world. The butler owned the room as Beth entered, so her reaction was lost in his conservative space.
Cunningly enough, he didn’t notice her.
Beth was born in Caracas and shipped over on a ferry when she was fifteen. Her recollection of that period in time was lost in the deep engraving of a dirt cup, like the one that lay untouched on the window sill. Beth was comforted by her surroundings, and the hollowness of the cup wasn’t wide enough to wipe away that dirty part yet.
Beth’s path lied in the hands of her husband more so over the years, as she chose to earn her keep as a maid to please him as such. She worked hard, in one of the noblest houses in London. Beth had never questioned her English forename; she kept a controlled emotional hold on her identity in England, and was not eager to dive into her South American background.
