The Goffs Park House in Crawley interpreted as a hotel by it’s appearance, turns out to be part museum and part owned by the Crawley Borough Council.  The building is a splendid piece of Architecture, apparently built in 1882. The Crawley Museum Society is the foci of this experience, and it occupies space at the far left of the building for that purpose. Located on top of a hill just above the park, the building is situated in a natural environment.

Although a small building, the space is prepared well as each corner offers a treasure of history. There is a Victorian Kitchen and a shoemakers workshop, which leaves interest to imagination. Upon seeing these my historical novel comes to mind, and settings of story start to rekindle.  The Crawley Museum Society upon entrance is filled with historical artefacts, and war memorabilia. Alongside this there is a collection of artefacts and documents dating from the stone age to the reconstruction of the new town after the War.

The museum seems to be much more than this, as friendly staff take you on a tour of Historical Crawley at War during the First World War period of 1914-1918. Experiences are shared by a few members off staff. One of the gentleman that tours, points to a photograph and shows us where he is, upon a group of young children who are pupils at a school. Most of the pupils had been evacuated from London, and now attended this school. Another gentleman points to a map of Crawley, and shows us the bomb attacks in the area. A saddened and frightful experience for those who experienced the sight. Netherless an educational and insightful experience, for those people like myself who have limited knowledge, on what it was like during the War in Crawley.

To find such an amazing piece of history and have been shown around the Museum, by people who were present during the War, was like finding the towns true value, a cherishable experience. The Crawley Museum Society is open on two afternoons a week. If you would like further information on the Museum, feel free to visit its website: http://www.crawleymuseum.moonfruit.com/
